The 13th SMM in Hamburg again presents itself as a perfect market place to the global shipping industry. Although the main activities in shipbuilding take place in Asia, also European - and at their top the German - shipyards are providing a great deal of specific and special tonnage to the shipowners community. And they all have full order books, whether located in the east or in the west. Marine equipment suppliers, accounting for many of the SMM exhibitors, have been riding on the boom wave of the industry during the past years. According to a spokesman of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), there is no sign of downturn on the horizon. Consequently one can expect also the SMM 2008 in Hamburg to become a good success. The keynotes of this trade fair will be again: »cost-efficiency« and »environmental protection«. Global and local companies are going to present a considerable number of latest technologies and developments around these items. Cutting fuel consumption, increasing cost-efficiency and safety and improving the environmental and climate protection will be in the focus, including environmental friendly propulsion and waste disposal plants. Another sector will cover innovations in communications and information technologies as well as navigation and automation systems and maritime services.
