Denis Morais is the winner of this year's GL COMPIT Award. At the COMPIT Conference taking place in the first May week in Berlin, the Canadian IT expert was honoured for his contributions to promote frontier technologies in shipbuilding. The award is sponsored by classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The jury singled out Denis Morais among several highly qualified candidates because his paper combined profound insight into business particularities of the maritime industries with an impressive scope of IT techniques as applied in other industries, written to make it easily accessible for a wider audience. The paper titled »Driving the Adoption of Cutting Edge Technology in Shipbuilding* explores possibilities of how advanced technologies such as Laser Scanning, Digital Prototyping and Shop Floor 3D could become more widely used, efficient and cost-saving assets for the shipping industry. Shipbuilding is a complex industry with a unique structure. While some shipbuilders are utilizing new technologies such as laser scanning, digital prototyping and shop floor 3D, these technologies are not as common as they are in other industries. There are several reasons why this is the case and these reasons involve complexity, culture and money. Fortunately, new technological developments are helping mitigate each of these factors. These factors include scalable shipbuilding software solutions tied to large generic CAD vendors with high R&D budgets, Cloud Computing and Parallel Processing. Together, these factors could help shipbuilders cost effectively adopt cutting edge processes and tools.
