The German organisation of Danish freight forwarding group DSV acts as lead logistics provider for General Motors and large first tier automotive suppliers, consolidating huge volumes of car parts and modules from German and European suppliers at a warehouse and packing centre in Bremen's GVZ (»Güterverkehrszentrum«). The goods are then packed in containers and dispatched just in time direct to overseas plants worldwide. Up to 300 TEU of cargo are being handled per week for dispatch mainly via Hamburg and Bremerhaven. DSV's services and logistics set-up for the contract has been awarded with a supplier award by General Motors at its Detroit headquarters twice already. With the growing globalisation of car manufacturing and commissioning of new plants in the emerging economies, DSV's automotive experts expect demand for overseas consolidation services to increase over the next decade.
