The Swedish engine manufacturer Volvo Penta has presented the company's new Inboard Performance System IPS900 to European shipyards and shipowners on a 1,850 nm tour through the North Sea and the English Channel. The system's origins are in recreational boating but Volvo Penta will also strongly concentrate to promote the system in commercial shipping. IPS900 features a diesel engine and two individually controllable pod drives. Therefore, the system qualifies for police and pilot boats as well as crew transfer vessels, coast guard vessels and smaller ferries with an operational profile of 20 to 40 kn. Selling points are manoeuvrability and fuel consumption reduced by one third at high speed range. Volvo Penta motor type D13 is at the heart of the system derated to 700 hp which results in longer maintenance intervals. An onboard Control Area Network (CAN) combines all electronics.
