From global AIS to market intelligence

Genscape Vesseltracker started tracking ships' Automated Identification System (AIS) signals in the local regions of Hamburg and Northern Europe in 2006. AIS is a VHF (very high frequency) radio based system for tracking ships, initially intended as a safety system that transmits detailed, high frequency reports of ships' positions, speed, heading, and size to massively enhance vessel tracking systems (VTS) and ship safety. As well as being a natural integration into bridge and port VTS systems, it became clear that AIS could provide valuable insight into maritime traffic and new business intelligence for companies working in the shipping and logistics spaces.
