Feeder segment V includes all geared container ships with a nominal capacity between 2,000 and 2,999 TEU. With a few exceptions, this segment's vessels are the biggest container ships capable of autonomous loading and unloading. This predestinates those vessels for employment in regional and interregional liner services where port infrastructure is insufficient (too small or no gantry cranes) despite considerable loading volumes. Ships belonging to this segment are mostly employed in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean Sea, but they also operate in other regions. In 2016 about 377 vessels of this kind were steaming on the global oceans.
