In the aviation industry pay per use is well-established. In spite of the ongoing cost pressure, shipping has shown restraint in such models so far. This could change in the future. The advantages are obvious: instead of high fixed costs, customers pay only for the actual time of use. The engine manufacturer Wärtsilä has already signed respective contracts with some shipping companies for LNG tankers and bulk carriers. Now, however, the trend seems to be increasing. Still no case has been reported of shipping companies who only pay for the use and are no longer owners of the engines. The existing contracts currently relate only to efficiency and maintenance.
