After the opening of Maasvlakte 2 in 2013 container handling dominated this 2000-hec-tare extension area in the Port of Rotterdam. Now offshore business is moving to the fore. A new offshore hub is to be built on the northern part of the area in Prinses Alexiahaven. Port of Rotterdam has commissioned the consortium PUMA for the water construction activities, consisting of Van Oord and Boskalis, to commission the water-related activities. A total of around 7 million cubic meters of sand will be extracted from the sea and from the port basins, and the access to the Alexiahaven will be deepened. Van Oord uses the suction dredgers »Volvox Olympia« and »Rotterdam«. Boskalis performs its operations with the suction dredger »Strandway«. In addition, the new »Helios« premieres at this project.
