Is box standardisation promoting or limiting intermodal growth?

To understand the different steps of standardisation it seems appropriate to structure the development phases of intermodal units into the past and present situation and the future prospects. Further on, we have to take into consideration that not only the ISO-TC 104 is the standard setting organisation for intermodal units but also continental organisations like CEN for Europe and ANSI for North America are organisations which focus on standardisation of units, which are intended to be used only in limited areas.
