Container terminals - visions become reality

A study entitled »Basic conditions and conceptual designs for container transport systems of the future« was concluded in October 1994. The current trend towards increasingly large container ships and the resultant concentration of global container services at a decreasing number of much larger ports was taken as the basis of the study. It therefore looked into the question of the size of container ships which could be expected in the future and investigated possible solutions to the problems involved with this development, such as the loading and unloading of a growing number of containers at ports and their distribution inland. The findings of the study were a recommendation for 8000 TEU ships and corresponding conceptual designs for sea ports and inland transport systems.
