Controlling a bulker's environmental impact

Politically, the environment has become a hot potato. Increasing public sympathy with the green lobby is putting pressure on politicians to force industry to clean up its act. The maritime sector in particular has come under scrutiny following highly publicised oil disasters. The public image of the industry is one in which badly maintained vessels pollute the world's seas and harbours. Although a harsh judgement in most cases, it is undeniable that the normal day-to-day running of a ship impacts on the environment. This impact can be monitored and controlled, however, using a documented environmental management system (EMS).
