Classification of chemical tankers

Classification and design of chemical tankers are governed by a variety of factors both of commercial and regulatory nature. Det Norske Veritas gives some design details for classifying these special vessels. The term » chemical tanker « does indeed cover a wide range of de-signs from quite simple vessels developed for transport of low-hazard type chemicals to highly complex ships constructed for the transport of a large variety of crude as well as refined oil products or even chemicals. There are also special purpose carriers built for the transport of a single or a few sophisticated chemicals. All vessels of these special kinds have to be classified. Det Norske Veritas, one of the well-known worldwide operating classification companies, gave some design details recently in a special seminar in Hamburg. In the following focus is put mainly on general purpose chemical tanker designs and their operation.
