Gas turbines first saw use on a significant scale as part of combined steam and gas propulsion systems. These first-generation applications used a combination of steam turbines and gas turbines,with a system of gearboxes and clutches that allowed either or both engines to drive a shaft. While the steam section offered cruising efficiency and reliability, the gas turbines allowed a fast startup time and rapid acceleration.
