ATWATER-BRONSON LACE AND SWEDISH LACE: PART Ⅰ

Atwater-Bronson lace and Swedish lace are so similar to each other that you might wonder why you would pick one over the other. This article explores their differences on four shafts; in the January/February 2019 issue of Handwoven, we will explore them on more than four. Mary Meigs Atwater is credited as the source for the weave structure we usually call Bronson lace. (For this reason, the name Atwater-Bronson lace is more accurate, though somewhat long!) The origin of Swedish lace is less clear. Marguerite Davison, in A Handweaver's Pattern Book, cites examples from the time of the Vikings. Our use of it comes primarily from Sweden, and Davison devotes a chapter to it in her book.
