A nap's Tim Chapman's keynote lecture will consider the motivation of developers and why they fund construction projects. It will outline the proportion of costs typically spent on foundations as a proportion of whole building and whole life costs. The lecture will also look at UK government guidance on optimism bias and how better geotechnical design and risk management may reduce it. Chapman will draw on the findings of his keynote conference paper that states that significant construction delays due to ground problems may affect 20% of building projects. He will explain that the average cost of these delays far outweighs the cost of site investigation measures that might have avoided them.
