Tech experts give green light to Messina crossing

Technical sign-off for foundation design and other aspects of the gigantic Messina Straits crossing project between Italy and Sicily was expected as GE went to press. The scheme involves construction of the world's largest suspension bridge with a central span of 3.3km and 382m high pylons. Correspondingly deep and complex foundation structures are required in a seismically active area. Throughout July the board of directors of client Stretto di Messina has been assessing the results of a complex multi-part review of the design and construction proposals for the estimated €6bn project. It is anticipated that they will give the reviews a clean bill of health. The complex assessment process, under way since last December, is the most comprehensive technical and procedural checking given to any project in Italy.
