Manhattan's Second Avenue Subway phase 1 opens

The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway on the Upper East Side of Manhattan has opened to the public, following a near-100 year wait. The project was first proposed in 1929, but was delayed several times over the last century. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which is responsible for public transport in New York City, said that it was biggest subway system expansion in 50 years.
