Balfour Beatty has started foundation repairs on the 2km Cairngorm funicular railway, which has been closed since 2018. Operators plan to reopen the railway after a detailed options appraisal that also considered replacing it with alternative infrastructure or removing it entirely at a cost of £17M. In 2018 consultant Cowi led an investigation into the railway after inspectors raised safety concerns. The inspectors concluded that the structure did not present an immediate danger to the public.
