LANDSLIP-HIT KENT RAIL LINE REOPENS

Network Rail South East undertook emergency slope repairs near Wadhurst in Kent on 17 March to ensure a blocked line could reopen as scheduled the following day. Geotechnical engineers were first alerted to the landslip after a tree fell down the cutting to the north of the rail tunnel at Wadhurst on 13 March. Continued ground movement delayed plans to remove debris and inspect the failure. Slope regrading work with a long reach excavator was just being completed when another landslip occurred 1km away. Engineers moved straight to the second landslip site and worked through until midnight to ensure the line could reopen on time.
