Network Rail consults on South Devon rail realignment

Network Rail is proposing to realign its coastal rail route in south Devon to better protect it from cliff falls, landslips and sea damage during extreme weather The work planned between Parsons Tunnel and Teignmouth is the subject of a five-week consultation. The 1.8km stretch of railway was closed for six weeks in 2014 after a landslide, plus the failure of the sea wall at Dawlish.The proposals include moving the railway away from the sections of cliff that pose the greatest hazard.Some land reclamation will be required to allow a buttress to be built and a rock revetment or enhanced sea wall constructed.Proposals for the project also include enhanced leisure access, cycling and walking routes and new amenity areas for the Holcombe beach.
