The Monte Grande dam is a key public infrastructure development in the south western province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic. Once completed, the hydroelectric complex is meant to control water flow and provide flood control in the lower basin of the Yaque del Sur River. It will also modernise irrigation infrastructure, supply drinking water and generate clean energy for the Barahona, Bahoruco and Azua provinces. INDRHI, the Dominican Water Resource Institute, is the developer behind the project, which comes with a US$400M (£314M) price tag. Main contractor Monte Grande consortium has been working on the dam since 2014. It comprises Brazilian contractor Andrade Gutierrez, with 70% stake, and Servinca Ingenieros y Arquitectos, a local firm with the remaining 30%. The dam was originally supposed to be finished by mid-2016, but construction halted a few months before then due to lack of funding, which was supposed to have come from the Brazilian Federal Development Bank.
