Flood protection for Scottish railway line

Network Rail has started work on the final phase of a £4.8M project addressing instability and flooding risks at Slochd, between Perth and Inverness on the Highland Mainline. Stabilisation work on slopes in cuttings and on embankments over a 2km stretch of railway have been underway since September and will continue until November. To date 11,000t of stone has been used to regrade more than 400m of railway cutting, up to 14m deep. More than 840m of concrete-lined drainage channels have been created and rock-netting has been installed. Ballast retention has also been added over 110m of cutting to support the crest and to provide a secure trackside cable troughing route. The project is part of a wider package of geotechnical works to address the risk of flooding, landslip or rockfall.
