New law aims to keep food, yard waste out of landfills

Businesses in California that generate large amounts of food waste or yard trimmings will have to separate them from the rest of their trash and send them to recycling, under legislation Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has signed into law. Brown on Friday approved A.B. 1826, a measure aimed at reducing amounts of trash going to landfills. That move will cut the greenhouse gas emissions associated with dumps, bill supporters said.
