Scientists solve mystery of racing rocks in Death Valley

Researchers have solved the mystery of moving rocks in California's Death Valley National Park. The rocks at Racetrack Playa -- so named because of the long movement trails from rocks, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, left in the mud -- move during sporadic conditions when rainwater runoff from the surrounding mountains partly fills the flat playa area, scientists said.
