The Second International Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Symposium was set for next year's 30th anniversary of the first meeting on Texas' official sea turtle, but disturbing trends in the wake of the 2010 BP PLC oil spill prompted organizers to hold the event a year early. "Given the increasing concerns about the status of the species, the lack of growth we've seen in the population, that, I thought, was enough reason to move the meeting up and have it as soon as possible," said Pamela Plotkin, director of the Texas Sea Grant College Program and associate research professor of oceanography at Texas A&M University at College Station.
