Houseboat emissions linked to 26 deaths over 18 years -- federal study

Carbon monoxide emitted from gasoline-powered houseboats caused 26 deaths in the United States between 1990 and 2008, but new technologies have made boats safer in recent years, according to a new federal report. The colorless, odorless and tasteless gas can accumulate in high concentrations under or near the rear decks of houseboats that run on gasoline, creating a danger for people swimming or working in that area, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found. The study found that 309 houseboat-related carbon monoxide poisonings occurred between 1990 and April 2008. About 8 percent of those resulted in death.
