The Fish and Wildlife Service today confirmed that the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome has been found on bats in Mississippi for the first time, alarming some environmentalists who say it's just a matter of time before bats there start to die and the disease spreads across the American West. So far, none of the bats found to have been exposed to the fungus in Mississippi have been confirmed to have white-nose syndrome, the deadly fungal disease that has killed nearly 7 million bats in the past eight years across the eastern half of the country.
