Poll on Hawaii Dem primary shows one incumbent winning and another losing

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie trails his Democratic primary challenger, state Sen. David Ige, by a 10-point deficit in a newly released poll commissioned by the League of Conservation Voters. The Public Policy Polling survey of 410 likely Democratic primary voters, conducted July 23-24, found Ige leading with 49 percent to Abercrombie's 39 percent. Another 12 percent of voters remained undecided ahead of the Aug. 9 primary. The poll had a 4.8-point margin of error. Abercrombie has struggled in his bid for a second term in the governor's office, including criticism of his decision to appoint then-Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz (D) to the Senate in late 2012 to replace the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (D) (E&E Daily, July 24). Prior to his death, Inouye indicated that he wanted Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D) to serve as his successor. Hanabusa is now challenging Schatz in next month's Democratic primary.
