Seaweed clearing could kill turtles, scientists say

Heavy equipment rolling along the beaches of Texas' Gulf Coast to clear unusually large piles of seaweed could be killing endangered sea turtles, scientists and turtle advocates say. The smelly influx of marine algae on the beaches surrounding Galveston has coincided with the nesting season of the Kemp's ridley turtle (Greenwire, June 12). Scientists worry the equipment is crushing or burying the nests. The same thing could be happening with juvenile endangered green turtles that are drifting ashore with the seaweed.
