Latest bailout keeps trust fund solvent through early summer

A recently approved congressional rescue package will keep the Highway Trust Fund in the black through the end of next June, according to a Department of Transportation forecast. The package, H.R. 3236, pumps almost $8.1 billion -- mostly from general Treasury revenues - - into the fund, the main conduit for federal spending on highways and public transportation. Those transfers will help maintain solvency through the third quarter of fiscal 2016, DOT said in a recent update to an online ticker that tracks the fund's financial health.
