Winds stir up century-old volcanic ash in Alaska

Ash left over from a volcanic eruption more than a century ago is still being blown into some Alaskan cities by strong winds. Kodiak was blanketed by a mixture of snow, sleet and ash Tuesday night, but officials said yesterday that the ash had not reached levels that would affect aircraft. Ash from the massive 1912 eruption of the Alaskan Peninsula's Novarupta volcano is often blown around in the spring and fall during windier and drier conditions, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (Associated Press, Sept. 30).
