40% of Europe's sharks, rays face extinction

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature's first comprehensive assessment of Europe's 1,220 marine species added about 40 percent of sharks and rays to the group's Red List as threatened with extinction. The group blamed overfishing as the primary factor, followed closely by bycatches, that has led to 7.5 percent of all the continent's marine species being at risk of extinction.
