Agency launches 5 climate research projects

NASA is starting five projects this year to study how the Earth's atmosphere influences climate change, including one that comes with an assist from Washington, D.C.-area government contractors. The project, a collaboration between NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., and Pennsylvania State University professor Kenneth Davis, aims to track the flow of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. NASA awarded a $3.5 million contract to Exelis Inc. to modify a laser instrument to collect carbon dioxide measurements as part of the project.
