An executive from Southern Co. today cast a positive light on construction of the country's first nuclear project in 30 years despite delays and cost increases tied to contractors. Joseph "Buzz" Miller, president of nuclear development at Atlanta-based Southern, said construction of the company's Vogtle reactors is "exemplary" for such a mega-project, likening the cost challenges to those seen with the Atlanta Falcons' stadium -- the second-most expensive NFL stadium ever built -- or the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. "It doesn't go as perfectly as we want, and no one expected it to," Miller said at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners' annual conference in Washington, D.C. "We'd like it to go faster with the contractor, but we'd like to get it right."
