Industry, enviros split on impact of nanoscale reporting

Industry groups warned U.S. EPA this week that a planned reporting requirement for manufacturers of nanoscale materials could adversely impact companies, as some state agencies and environmental groups urged the agency to take a stricter approach to how it handles the emerging class of chemicals. EPA is considering a proposed rule calling for reporting of nanoscale materials data under a previously unused application of the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976. Companies would be required on a one-time basis to submit exposure and health and safety information on nanoscale materials, generally classified as having chemical structures 800 to 1,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
