Dozens of firefighters from Australia and New Zealand are among the troops and volunteers traveling to assist beleaguered crews fighting one of the worst fire seasons on record in the Pacific Northwest. About 11,600 square miles has been burned so far, the most acreage scorched by this date in a decade. Three firefighters have died in Washington state, four have been injured and hundreds of homes have been burned as fire crews are stretched to the limits of their abilities. Chris Arnol, international liaison for Australian and New Zealand firefighters, said at a news conference in Boise, Idaho, that the firefighters were ready to assist.
