Chicago re-elects Emanuel as mayor

Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) kept his seat in Chicago's first mayoral runoff election, defeating challenger Jesus "Chuy" Garcia yesterday. In his victory speech, Emanuel thanked voters for "a second term and a second chance." In the six weeks of campaigning that preceded election day, Garcia sought to frame the contest as a choice between progressives and establishment Democrats. Emanuel ultimately prevailed with 55.7 percent of the vote to Garcia's 44.3 percent, in part thanks to outspending his opponent.
