Department has $2.2B slated in subsidies for loans -- report

The Department of Energy has billions of dollars wrapped up in credit subsidies for loans made to high-tech clean energy and fuel-efficient vehicles, according to a new report. In a study released yesterday, the Government Accountability Office said DOE estimates of its loans' credit subsidy costs are $2.21 billion over their lifetime. That includes $807 million for loans made to projects that have since defaulted, such as Solyndra, the much-maligned and bankrupt solar manufacturing company.
