Russian trawler sinks, killing at least 56

At least 56 crew members of a Russian fishing trawler died early this morning when the vessel sank in the icy waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. The Dalny Vostok had 132 crew members and did not send a distress signal prior to sinking at about 4 a.m. local time. A cause for the incident has not yet been determined, but investigators say the ship went down in just 15 minutes, which could have happened after it collided with sea ice. Emergency services in Kamchatka said 63 crew members were rescued, but 13 are still missing. Roughly 26 fishing boats and 1,300 fishermen and emergency workers participated in the search and rescue.
