Farmers protest as greens post maps, data for N.C. CAFOs

Environmental groups have created interactive maps of more than 6,500 big livestock farms in North Carolina, and they promised yesterday to expand the project to other states. The two-year effort by the Environmental Working Group and Waterkeeper Alliance allows computer users to pinpoint concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) that state officials haven't been willing to identify, organizers said. "We now literally have a road map," said Christian Breen, CAFO coordinator at Waterkeeper Alliance, who said North Carolina gives the public scant detail about such operations. Waterkeeper Alliance and the EWG demonstrated the system in a conference call with reporters yesterday.
