An overwhelming number of U.S. citizens said they are in favor of using genetically engineered mosquitoes to fight the spread of the Zika virus, a new survey found. The World Health Organization recently said the use of genetically modified mosquitoes might be necessary to destroy specific insect populations thought to be rapidly spreading the Zika virus across the Americas (Greenwire, Feb. 16). While some environmentalists have criticized the approach -- arguing that it is impossible to know the long-term consequences of eradicating an entire insect population -- the study demonstrates that many Americans have no objection to the tactic.
