FDA proposes lead limit for lipstick, eye shadow

The Food and Drug Administration released a draft guideline yesterday for allowable levels of lead in lipstick, lip gloss, eye shadow, lotions and other cosmetics. FDA recommended a limit of 10 parts per million for the heavy metal, a neurotoxin that is also linked to kidney damage and miscarriage. Lead is not intentionally added to cosmetic products. Rather, it is naturally occuring and can accumulate in manufactured goods depending on the ingredients used. In 2012, FDA reported that lead levels in lipstick had increased significantly since 2007, surging from an average of 3.06 parts per million to as high as 7.19 (Greenwire, Feb. 8, 2012).
