Zinke taps NRA official to help raise money

In a little-noticed move, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has appointed a senior official of the National Rifle Association to help raise private money for national parks. Susan LaPierre, co-chair of the NRA Women's Leadership Forum and the wife of NRA Executive Director Wayne LaPierre, is now on the board of the National Park Foundation, the charity arm of the National Park Service. Heather Swift, a spokeswoman for Zinke, said LaPierre was chosen "due to her extensive experience as a successful fundraiser and advocate for youth and women." LaPierre, who grew up in Wisconsin and now lives in Vienna, Va., will serve on the board until 2023. She's one of four new board members this year. The foundation called LaPierre "an accomplished fundraiser" and noted that she has more than 30 years experience working on behalf of charitable and political causes.
