A federal judge yesterday sentenced an Irish national to 18 months in prison for trafficking what government officials said was a cup carved from the horn of an endangered rhinoceros. According to his indictment, Michael Hegarty of Ireland and a co-defendant purchased the "libation cup" from a North Carolina auction house, transported it to Florida and then created fake documents to smuggle it from the United States to the United Kingdom.
