PORT REPUBLIC, Va. — Glenn Rodes makes his living selling tens of thousands of turkeysrnand around 3 million pounds a year of milk from his farm in the Shenandoah Valley.rnBut it's a byproduct of his business that demands Rodes' most imaginative thinking: manure.rnRodes burns poultry litter to heat the turkey house. He uses its ashes in compost or sells it tornother farmers. He mixes cow manure — too expensive to truck away and more valuable as arnfertilizer — with water and sprays it on his fields, using a special manure spreader that injectsrnthe liquid straight into the ground, where it won't run off and doesn't smell as bad.
