Labs plagued by mismanagement, safety hazards - report

The nation's eight nuclear weapons facilities remain dangerous for workers, and mishaps and accidents are often shrouded in secrecy, leaving the private firms that run the labs unpunished, according to Department of Energy documents acquired by the Center for Public Integrity. Private firms make between $40,000 and $160,000 a day to run the labs, but DOE's enforcement arm in the past decade waived or significantly reduced 19 of the 21 major fines imposed for safety lapses or workplace misconduct.
