German probe expands as investigators zero in on ex-CEO

German prosecutors are expanding their probe into Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal, officials said today. Investigators are increasing the number of suspects and also say they have evidence that former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn may have known about the cheating earlier than he claims. The 69-year-old stepped down in September 2015. He told a parliamentary committee earlier this month that he was not informed early on about the "measurement problems" (Greenwire, Jan. 19).
