The Forest Service formally proposed a two-year moratorium on new mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The plan published Friday in the Federal Register was first announced last month when the agency denied vital mine lease renewal to the Twin Metals mine near Ely, Minn. (Greenwire, Dec. 15, 2016). It would ban new projects or exploration on 234,328 acres of the Superior National Forest.
