Google parent races ahead of competitors in Calif. tests

The autonomous vehicle developed by Google's parent company is ahead of the competition in both miles logged and rate of deactivations, road tests in California show. Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo - which Google first began developing in 2009 - traveled over 635,000 miles between December 2015 and November 2016. Waymo outperformed its rivals in terms of system errors: Car deactivations, a marker of technological malfunction, occurred 0.2 times per 1,000 miles.
