Elephant poachers killed two wildlife rangers in Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On April 11, rangers Joël Meriko Ari and Gerome Bolimola Afokao came across a group of six poachers chopping up fresh elephant carcasses. In an ensuing shootout, both rangers were killed.
